Starry Night Clarksville

This mural is painted by @draftsbyolasubomi features the Montgomery County Courthouse and Customs House museum on a background similar to Van Gogh's Starry Night. It is located off Madison St. near Hiter St. in the parking lot for Dollar General.

Civil War Cannon - Dover

Located across the street from the Stewart County Courthouse is this cannon that was used in the civil war at nearby Fort Donelson.

Rutherford County Confederate Memorial - Murfreesboro, TN

This Confederate Monument is located on the Murfreesboro town square in front of the Rutherford County Courthouse. The text of the monument reads:
In Commemoration of the valor of Confederate Soldiers who fell in the great Battle of Murfreesboro, Dec. 31, 1862, and January 2, 1863, and in minor engagements in this vicinity, this monument is erected.

Additionally, in May of 2011, the Sons of Confederate Veterans placed a Sesquicentennial Marker in front of the memorial.

Caldwell County Courthouse - Princeton, KY

listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Princeton Downtown Commercial District. The most distinct feature of this Art Deco courthouse completed in 1940 are the reliefs of U.S. Presidents, one of which is visible in this view if you look at the original size.

Old Federal Building at dusk - Richmond, KY

Completed in 1890, the Richardsonian Romanesque building was used as a post office and a federal district court. The four story building has a tall tower with an open belfry and clock-faced dormers on the steep pyramidal roof. The exterior is made from smooth and rusticated ashlar-cut stone.

Today, the building is named "Madison Hall of Justice" above the three entrance arches. The building also was once the Richmond City Hall. Sometimes, it has been called the McCreary Building after the former governor and then congressman who secured federal money for the building.

Simpson County Courthouse - Franklin, KY

This brick building with stone trim featuring small porches and a clock tower was designed by the McDonald Brothers from Louisville. It has undergone extensive remodeling and updating, but remains basically the structure built in 1882 using a Late Victorian style. In 1962, wings were added to mimic the original style. About 25 years ago, the county built a new criminal justice center. This is one of those courthouses that used to be surrounded by mature trees, so you had to find creative views or see it in the winter. I was last here in 2008 and a tree that used to be right up to the building is now missing. The town square is located along highway U.S. 31W. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Douglass Clark House (and Courthouse)

The original log house which incorporates a single room building, built in 1787, served as the first Sumner County Courthouse. Andrew Jackson appeared at the courthouse in his role as Attorney General for the Metro District. In the 1860s, four sons of Emma Douglass Clark fought for the Confederate Army in the Civil War. Only one of the four Douglas men, Charles, survived the war. He was discharged after serving under the command of General Nathan Bedford Forrest.

This house is located outside of Gallatin where Long Hollow Pike (TN174) passes Station Camp Creek. The home remained a family dwelling until 2007 when it was sold to the county. From there, Sumner County spent several years completely renovating the home. In 2015, the home opened as a visitor's center. The home was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2011.

United States Custom House, Court House and Post Office - Memphis

Located along Front St. in Downtown Memphis, this massive building originated in 1876. At the time when it was just a Customs House, it included two clock towers. In 1929, the building was expanded to become the post office at the towers were removed and it became the massive wall of granite. As of 2010, the building serves as the University of Memphis School of Law.

The name of the building in the title of the photo comes from the name engraved in the top center of the building. It's listed on the National Register of Historic Places as U.S. Post Office - Front Street Station.

Dolly Parton Statue - Sevierville, TN

In 1987, the people of Sevier County, Tennessee built a statue to Dolly Parton on the grounds of the county courthouse.

Oldest Courthouse West of the Appalachain Mountains

Old Green County Courthouse - Greensburg, KY
I've been told this is the oldest courthouse in America west of the Appalachians. It's certainly the oldest courthouse in Kentucky, built in 1804. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as "The Old Courthouse." It was in use for 135 years. Read the complete story in the National Register nomination form:

Knox County Courthouse - Knoxville, TN

This Victorian era county courthouse located in downtown Knoxville was built in 1886 and is difficult to photograph when the trees are in bloom. The most distinguishing feature is the tall, elaborately layered clock tower which projects upwards from the front of the main floor. The building has seen multiple additions and renovations over the years leading to the 1979 City County Building which is across the street but connects via crosswalk.

Smith County Courthouse in Autumn - Carthage, TN

The two story Smith County Courthouse was built in 1877 in Second Empire Style at a cost of $16,000. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

This is a Real Photo Post Card and would be at least 70 years old. The courthouse is mostly unchanged since then.

Tribute to Blue Angels Capt. Jeff Kuss - Nashville Davidson Courthouse (2016)

Seen here is one of the tributes to Capt. Jeff Kuss who died in a plane crash on June 2, 2016. Capt. Kuss was a pilot for the Navy's flight demonstration team, the Blue Angels where he was the Opposite soloist and pilot of plane #6. The Blue Angels were in Smyrna, TN rehearsing for the Great Tennessee Air Show.

Capt. Kuss was already a hero based on his years of service in the U.S. Military. Going beyond that, it is suggested that he did not eject from his F-16 jet so that he could guide the jet to an empty field in an otherwise densely populated area. That is where the story hits home for me as my family and I live about a half mile from where he crashed and my wife and son were home at the time.

Old Roane County Courthouse - Kingston, TN

Built in 1854, its one of 6 courthouses in TN built before the civil war that still stands today. Used as a Courthouse until 1974 when the new one was built. It was used as a civil war hospital and graffiti written by civil war soldiers can still be seen on the inside. The state of Tennessee placed an Obelisk in the front yard commemorating this as the location of the state capital (for one day in 1807). Today, the building is used as a museum.

Post Card Tuesday: Williamson County Courthouse

This linen-era post card shows the 1858 Williamson County Courthouse along the town square in Franklin. In the foreground is a Civil War cannon in the middle of the square which is still there today. The biggest difference between the courthouse then and today is the white paint. The paint was removed sometime in the late 70's or early 80's to reveal the original brick. The courthouse today also has a 1976 expansion behind the historic front.

Washington County Courthouse - Springfield, KY

I previously drove through here in 2006, and at the time it was still used as a courthouse. Since then, a new courthouse has opened across the street and this has become the Lincoln Legacy Museum.

According to plaques on the grounds, Abraham Lincoln was never certain his parents were married when he was born. In those days, that was a scandal which would have disqualified him from being President in the opinion of many voters. He hired investigators to find proof of their marriage, which did not happen before his assassination. Later in 1878, the marriage certificate was found in this courthouse.

The Washington County Courthouse in Springfield in Washington County, Kentucky is located on Springfield's Public Square, at Main at Lincoln Park Rd. It was built during 1814-15. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977.

It is a two-story brick courthouse, with brick laid in Flemish bond. Among other changes designed by architect Frank Brewer, it has an octagonal cupola added in 1840.

It is included as a contributing building in the Springfield Main Street Historic District.

Fayette County Courthouse - Somerville, TN

In Feb 1926, Fayette County's third courthouse burned down. The county acted quickly to have a new one built in the town square as within 6 weeks architect George Mahan Jr. designed this courthouse. It was completed the following year at a cost of $106,000.

Much of the exterior is made of buff-colored brick. At the main entrance is as entry portico with 4 Ionic columns. Above this on the roof is a copper domed roof and clock tower. The building went through extensive remodeling in the 80s. The courthouse is also listed on the National register of Historic Places as part of the Somerville Historic District.

The featured building in the Athens Courthouse Square Commercial Historic District is the Limestone County Courthouse, built in 1919 in Neoclassical style with Palladian influences. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997 and the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage in 2012.

On the November day this photo was taken in 2016, a large Christmas wreath was displayed along each side. There is also some construction work being done on the grounds.

Cheatham County Courthouse - Ashland City, TN

The front of the Courthouse which is seen here serves as the main entrance with two columns and was built in 1914. An older section of the building is behind the front part and was built in 1869. If you view large, the words "Cheatham County Courthouse" appear above the front of the building. There is no "town square" in Ashland City, but this building faces the intersection on TN12 and TN49/249. Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. The County Jail was added to the back of the courthouse in the 1980s.

This visit was made during October 2014 when the county placed some Breast Cancer Awareness Month decorations on the grounds. These include a pink ribbon on the lawn, a pink wreath above the main entrance and pink bows on the lamps
