Woodbury Funeral Home neon sign - day and night

Most of my neon sign photos belong to Motels, cinemas, Restaurants, gift shops, drug stores and tourist traps. To me, it seems like a neon sign is out of place at a funeral home. However, I like neon signs and I can get over that kind of hang-up to photograph it in the day and the night time. (Seen along Main St. in Woodbury.)

Cannon Courthouse & Car Show

My wife and I were travelling to Woodbury, TN one Saturday afternoon in the fall. We stopped at a restaurant on the town square, and while we were eating, a bunch of classic cars pulled up to the square and a car show broke out. A friend from town says these shows are frequent in Woodbury.

The Car in the photo is a Camaro Z28. 2017 is the 50th year of the Camaro.

In Woodbury, TN on U.S. Highway 70S and it is still open for business. My wife and I went to screen 1, the first time we'd ever been to a drive in.

Auburntown, TN Porch entertainment

The town of Auburntown in Cannon County, might be small, but they know how to have a good time. They are best known for their two big annual Fish Frys and their Red Apple Days. They have smaller fish fry events most every weekend through the summer and fall, and on this day a local band was performing from the front porch of this old mansion, while many of the townsfolk sat on either side of the street (TN145) in their lawn chairs.

Cannon County Jail - Woodbury, TN

The original part of the jail was built in 1880 and consists of the part made of stone and the second story above it. In 1975, the area on the right was added which is the sheriff's office and living quarters. At that time, the old part was painted white and the right part was unpainted red brick. Since then, a new jail has opened a quarter mile away from this one along the town square.

Cannon County Courthouse at Dusk - Woodbury, TN

This courthouse was completed in 1936, and in my opinion is one of the nicest great depression era courthouses. Designed in a Neo-classical style of brick on a stone foundation, the courthouse features two story stone pilasters and corner quoins on the barely taller central section. The gable roof is topped by a tall clock tower. The courthouse replaced an 1838 courthouse, which burned down in 1934 and was also located at the center of the town square.

Woodbury is one of those small towns that's close to where I live, so I pass through often. There's been a change since my last visit here: All the big trees have been removed and replaced with small trees. While I like a nice tree, they do get in the way if you are concentrating on the building behind it. Also new is the addition of nice benched, decorative fencing, and a main sidewalk of concrete and brick pattern.

My father-in-law has a '49 Plymouth that he takes to shows, but beyond that, I don't know what I'm looking at. My interest is more in courthouses, and I thought this made for an interesting photo opportunity.

The beautiful black coupe in front is a '37 Chevy for sure. Not a good enough view of the red one behind it to say for sure, the missing hood-sides are a hindrance, but it looks like a '36 Chevy. The red pick-up is a '55 thru '57 Chevy, the unique difference between those years is the grilles which we can't see in this shot.

It's Fun for the Family in Rock City

This is known as "Leon Thomas's Rock City Barn." It is located on U.S. Highway 41 in Hillsboro, TN which is about 8 miles north of Monteagle. This is in Coffee County.

You might notice the 3 wooden slats on the right are a slightly different color. Almost 20 years ago, a tornado came through this area and ripped that portion of the barn off. The wood was replaced, and then repainted.

Decades ago, this barn did not have the front extension. Underneath the "Rock City" was the edge of the barn. At one time, This vertical section had an ad for "Wonder Cave" which is in the area.

I have photographed this barn once before in 2006. Back then, the Rock City paint job looked shiny in new, so this is how it looks after 6 years of the elements. Also, the older view was the angle you'd see it from highway US41, whereas this view is an alternate angle from a side street. This barn is located on Highway TN145, which is the quiet country road in Cannon County that runs from Woodbury to Auburntown. This painted advertisement barn, with chickens running around is located somewhere between the unincorporated towns of Brysonville and Hardscrabble. It's not far from a pretty neat goat farm.

The Ready House of Readyville

I recently watched a documentary on the history of Rutherford County. The first county seat was the now underwater town of Jefferson. County officials wanted to move the county seat to a better location. Murfreesboro was ulitmately chosen, but Mr. Ready wanted his town of Readyville to be the new county seat (presumably so he could make a lot of money selling a lot of his land in the area.) After Murfreesboro was chosen, Mr.Charles Ready continued to throw a fit about Readyville not being chosen.

Soon afterward, when it was necessary to create the border between Rutherford and Cannon counties, Officials made sure the border went through Mr. Ready's house and mill so that he'd have to pay taxes in both counties. From this vantage point, the East side on the left is cannon County and the right west side is Rutherford.

Eventually, Charles Ready became a U.S. Congressman.
