Roseate Spoonbill - Birmingham Zoo

Roseate Spoonbill - Birmingham Zoo

The Spoonbill enclosure at the Birmingham Zoo is quite nice. There were about 30 of these adorable birds behind a net and the humans could walk along two of the sides of the exhibit.

City Federal Building - Birmingham, AL

City Federal Building - Birmingham, AL

From Wikipedia:
The City Federal Building (originally the Comer Building) is a skyscraper located on Second Avenue North in Birmingham, Alabama. It was built in 1913 and was designed by architect William C. Weston. It stands 27 stories or 325 feet on the Birmingham skyline.
At the time it was completed it was the tallest building in the Southeast. It was the tallest building Alabama from 1913 to 1969, and the tallest in Birmingham until 1972. Currently, it is the 5th tallest building in Birmingham. It is still the tallest neoclassical building in the south. The building has since been converted into commercial space and high end condominiums. On December 14, 2005 the City Federal Building's famous red neon sign was re-lit for the first time since the mid-1990s, signaling the buildings renewal.

Green-Winged Macaw - Birmingham Zoo

Green-Winged Macaw - Birmingham Zoo

The Green-winged macaw is a large mostly-red macaw of the Ara genus. It is the largest of the Ara genus, widespread in the forests and woodlands of northern and central South America. However, in common with other macaws, in recent years there has been a marked decline in its numbers due to habitat loss and illegal capture for the parrot trade.

The Green-winged macaw can be readily identified from the Scarlet Macaw as whilst the breast of both birds is bright red, the upper-wing covert feathers of the Green-winged macaw are mostly green but can occasionally sport a few yellow feathers above the band of green (as opposed to mostly yellow, or a strong mix of yellow and green in the Scarlet Macaw). In addition, the Green-winged macaw has characteristic red lines around the eyes formed by rows of tiny feathers on the otherwise bare white skin patch; this is one of the biggest differences from a Scarlet Macaw to the casual viewer. Iridescent teal feathers are surrounded by red on the tail. If seen together, the Green-winged macaw is clearly larger than the Scarlet Macaw as well.

Penny Dog Food sign - Birmingham, AL

Penny Dog Food sign - Birmingham, AL

Birmingham Hide & Tallow Corportate headquarters. The sign dates back to the 1950s and the tail and eyes used to move. This sign is located along 1st Ave N just east of downtown (also along US11).

This local landmark has been restored several times. I have been told it's going to be soon moved to Regions Field (if it hasn't been already.)

The Hours Passed - The Picture Stayed

The Hours Passed - The Picture Stayed

In the "They Don't Make Them like they used to" category, I submit this vintage and restored wall mural for a Television manufacturer seen in downtown Birmingham. "The Hours Passed - The Picture Stayed" By that line, I guess that other TVs got fuzzy the longer you left them on.

The next thing I noticed about this mural is everyone is depicted wearing their nice formal wear. I suppose that having the chance to watch one of those newfangled moving picture boxes in the comfort of your own home was worth dressing up for. Then, you invite your neighbors and serve wine.

Don't Look, Ethyl!

"Don't Look Ethel!"

...But it's too late, she'd already been incensed.

Two Meerkats seen at the Birmingham Zoo.

(For those of you not familiar with the reference at the title of this post, It's a comedy song by Ray Stevens from the 70s. The video, which was released several years later was filmed in Nashville, and some of it at Belmont University.)

Birmingham Zoo Ostrich

Birmingham Zoo Ostrich

I think my favorite thing about the ostrich is of all the animals on the planet, they have the smallest brain, compared to the size of the rest of the body. While they don't bury their head in the sand when frightened, I wouldn't want to get in a fight with one.
