The Salt House - Jonesborough, TN

The Salt House - Jonesborough, TN

Salt is needed for curing meat, but during the civil war it was in short supply. In Jan. 1864, Washington County purchased 4500 dollars worth of salt to be distributed for $15 per sack. That salt was stored here in a building by the train tracks and roughly a couple of blocks from the town square.

The building was recently renovated and there were plans to turn this into a restaurant, but with the for sale sign in the window (Sept. 2009), I suppose that's not happening.

  1. I really think it is sad what the historical committee has allowed to let happen to new businesses wishing to open in your cute little town just because it has to be their way or no way. that's why people won't buy any property to help keep the Towne of Jonesborough in business. Special this and that, and no none of that to the buildings. I truly believe in keeping everythinghistorical and looking like it once was but some things are ridiculous!! especially when you think about purchasing a place and the person right next door comes over and said to me "WHAT ARE YOU PLANNING ON PUTTING IN THIS BUILDING??? Well, first of all what if I had said a topless coffee shoppe or some else totaslly crazy; just to tick them off for being so nosey. It's no money out of their pocket to purchase it; right? Next if I am discussing business with the owners; why would you put your two cents in; HOW RUDE and SHE KNOWS WHO SHE IS!! DOESN'T SHE!!! The committe over tese places should worry about all the rotten would underneath the awnings and over hangs right on MAIN STREET.. HOPE THEY FIND A TAKER REAL SOON FOR THIS BUILDING IT'S A DANDY!!! JUST DON'T VISIT WITH THE NEIGHBOR!!ha!!
