Nashville Skyline (2008) - 26 minutes after sunset

Nashville Skyline 4f - 26 minutes after sunset

2 barges going opposite directions had just gone through causing the water to be choppier making the reflection less glasslike and more frosty looking.

Downtown Louisville at Night

Downtown Louisville at Night

Across the Ohio River, in Clarksville, Indiana, there's a lovely little spot that's a perfect place to sit on a park bench and get a good look at the skyline.

On the left, you can see the rather new KFC Yum! Center. The Aegon Center is the tallest with the illuminated dome up top. The Galt House is in front of it. The E.ON U.S. Center is the one on the left with the green light on top. Next to that are the two Waterfront Plaza towers.

Nashville Skyline at Dusk 2014

Nashville Skyline at Dusk 2014 #4

Every time I decide to take a photo of the Nashville Skyline, there seems to be a subtle change. The most notable difference I see is that the old CVS/Caremark building is now the Baker Donaldson building. Also of note, with the new park on the east shore, the boat ramp I used to set up at is no longer available.

While I was taking this long exposure still photo, I had a second camera setup to take a time lapse video. See it here:

Technical details: This photo was taken on 2/1/2014 when sunset at 5:13 pm. This was at 6:32pm, 5sec., f/16, ISO1600. Also, there was a barge going by during this photo and you can see the barge and its headlight.

The Nashville Skyline from Skyline Hospital

The Nashville Skyline from Skyline Hospital

Back in late March and early April of 2014, my wife was a patient at this hospital. While I was there with her, I kept wondering what the best place was there to take a picture of the Nashville Skyline. I really didn't have time to go looking for it. However, on the day she was discharged I went to the top floor and took this picture from the lobby. It was through a dirty window on a cloudy day, but here it is. I'll pretend it's a hip Instagram filter.

The Parthenon (with some of the Nashville Skyline)

The Parthenon (with some of the Nashville Skyline)

I love taking pictures of the Parthenon and it occurred to me that this was an angle I'd never before seen.

On a personal note, this photo has extra special meaning to me. At the time, my wife was an ICU patient at Centennial Medical Center which is seen along the left of the picture. She nearly died on Feb. 22 2014 but the fine doctors there kept her alive. A month later, she was still in the ICU but not as critical, so I felt comfortable walking around the neighborhood and seeing some of the sights. You can learn more of the experience here:

View of Downtown Nashville from Love Circle

View of Downtown Nashville from Love Circle

If you're in Nashville and you've never been to Love Circle, I suggest you do it before the tress bloom, as your view is more obstructed then. This place is voted as the best cheap date spot in Nashville. I had always assumed that Love Circle was, ahem, named for what couples did while there. (Kissing, that is). However, I recently noticed that it is really named after John W. Love. This was the site of the city's reservoir before the current one on 8th ave. In this picture, among other things, you can see the State Capitol, Tennessee Tower, The Sheraton with the old rotating restaurant and Kirkman Tower on the Vandy campus.

Chattanooga Skyline from Lookout Mountain

Chattanooga Skyline from Lookout Mountain

The best place in the Chattanooga area to see the skyline and downtown area is probably from Point Park, which is the northenmost tip of Lookout Mountain. Of course, the city doesn't have much of a skyline to look at as there aren't any featured, attention-grabbing buildings.

The Sunsphere!

Sunsphere

The monument to clean energy from the 1982 World's Fair in Knoxville. It looks like a microphone, or Reunion Tower in Dallas, and Bart Simpson found wigs at the top. I think I was able to ride to the top in 1994. I hear it reopened again a year or two ago, so you can get views of the city from here.

The locals, from what I hear, roll their eyes at the thought of the place. Some think it's ugly, while others think the city could have done something better for the World's Fair. Sometimes, drunk UT students try to fire a gun at it in an attempt to bust out a window. Then all the wigs might fall out.

Nashville Skyline at Dusk

Nashville Skyline 4g - 31 minutes after sunset

The skyline has actually changed a little bit since I took this photo in January of 2008.

If you want a good skyline view of downtown Nashville, there are two places you can find photographers on a dry Friday evening. First, the Shelby Street pedestrian bridge has a nice observation deck where you can get a good view. Second, not far from the Coliseum, are some stairs that lead down to the Cumberland River. Sometime around 2000, the Opryland people thought it would be a good idea to have river taxis run from their hotel to downtown. Those river taxis eventually were unsuccessful, but the dock remains on the east bank. If you're not careful, you could walk strait into the river, but if you back up a few steps and bring a tripod you can get a view like this.

If you go at dusk, on a clear night you can get a nice blue hue to the background. Then on nights where there are a few clouds, the setting sun casts vibrant colors on the clouds.

This is a rare photo of mine where no post-processing was done on this picture (and it wasn't because I didn't try - I just thought that I spent the time getting the colors the way I wanted them while taking the picture and then no enhancement I tried made me any happier with the result.)
