21st Avenue South Firehall - Nashville, TN

21st Avenue South Firehall - Nashville, TN

Fire Station 16, located at 2219 21st Avenue, South, was constructed on property acquired by the city of Nashville on July 16, 1929, and was completed in 1930. The building was built in the Tudor Revival style popular in the adjoining neighborhoods. It is the second oldest fire hall in Nashville remaining in its original use. It was undergoing renovations when I took this photo 8 years ago, which is why the window is boarded up.

Over 100 years ago, this was also the site of a tollbooth along Hillsboro Rd.

Jones Pet Shop neon sign

Jones Pet Shop

This sign is located in Hillsboro Village along the very busy 21st Ave. (US 431), now Fido's coffee shop, but they thankfully left the sign. Decades ago, they had a trained parrot in the pet shop that would say "Jones Pet Shop" when people would walk in.

Pancake Pantry - Gatlinburg, TN

Pancake Pantry - Gatlinburg

I have eaten at the Popular Pancake Pantry in Gatlinburg as often as I've eaten at the one in my hometown of Nashville - all of one time.

I believe the one in Hillsboro Village in Nashville is the original location and the one here is their second one. I might try to go to the one in Nashville if there wasn't a huge line out the door every time I drive by.

Belcourt Theater

Belcourt Theater

It wasn't too long ago that the residents in and around Hillsboro Village had a massive campaign to save this local landmark. You may remember the Belcourt YES! signs.

From the historical marker:
Hillsboro Theater
in 1925, the Hillsboro theater opened as a silent film house with its entrance on 21st Avenue South. The stage arch was decorated by Italian craftsman Raffaelo Mattei. It was the home of the Children's Theater of Nashville after 1931, the Grand Old Opry between 1934 and 1936, and the Nashville Community Playhouse after 1937. It became the Belcourt Cinema in 1966.
